The mighty Murray River flows more than 3000 km, from its headwaters in the Snowy Mountains to the Murray mouth at Goolwa.
In South Australia, the river flows beside towering cliffs, stately red river gum trees, golden citrus orchards and deep green vineyards, and this section of the river is not affected by the flood water snags and sand bars that cause such problems upstream.
Known as Big River country, the best way to soak in the majesty of the river is from the deck of a luxury Houseboat. Ever changing scenery, flocks of birds, grazing cattle and drooping willows, all passing by at a leisurely pace. "Imagine"
Scattered along the way you'll find towns and communities which will provide you with ample supplies and a warm
welcome. Riverglen is approximately a 5 hour cruise to Mannum, while Swan Reach is just 18.5 hours away with Blanch
Town lock 1 around 22 hours. Moorings along the river are abundant and nights can be spent watching the sun set
across the river.
"There is nothing like it"
You don't need to be a "master mariner" to handle a Houseboat, as full driving tuition is provided. So if you are over 18 years of age and hold a current driver's licence, you can arrange your Houseboat Holiday today.
Things to do & places to go!
Fishing - While cruising on the Murray on your houseboat holiday, you may wish to try some fishing or ‘yabbying’ – all you need is a fishing rod (we have a couple available for hire), tackle (we sell tackle) and bait (we suggest you purchase worms on your way here, or we can sell you some corn to get you started). We sell yabby nets and all you need for bait is some kind of meat – chop bones from last nights’ dinner are perfect.
Birdwatching – There are numerous species of birds and ducks on the river and in the many backwaters and wetlands. Bring a bird identification book and binoculars or ask to borrow from our kiosk.
Sightseeing – the scenery along our stretch of the river is spectacular and diverse, from huge gum trees, wetlands, cliffs that change in colour and texture, small river settlements, farming land and larger towns. Be sure to bring your camera to capture your experience – there’s always a photo opportunity – maybe it’s the mist rising from the river at dawn or catching the changing colours of sunset or the good times experienced by your friends and family.
Kayaking – get into the wetlands with a kayak, we have two person kayaks available for hire, along with paddles and life jackets.
Water sports – bring your speed boat or tinny and get into your favourite activity from dawn until dusk.
Bushwalking – get some country air into your lungs and take a walk among the gum trees!
Food and Wine – kitchens on all our houseboats are well equipped so bring your favourite recipes and ingredients (or utilize our free boat stocking service) and whip up a feast! There are also restaurants, cafes, bakeries, hotels and clubs in the region which offer a variety of meals to cater for your family/group of friends so you can take a day off from the kitchen. Willow Point Wines is located just one kilometre from Riverglen Marina, so call in for a tasting and buy a few bottles of their great wines or if you’re running short of time purchase from our licensed kiosk.
Places to go – Mannum is approximately six hours travelling time by houseboat upstream from Riverglen Marina. Most people head there and enjoy the variety on offer – from pubs to museums and all sorts in between. If you don’t want to travel far, you can head downstream to Tailem Bend and Wellington where there is less boat traffic but still great waterfront hotels in both towns to grab a feed or enjoy a night out without having to drive home.
Night time entertainment – apart from the nightlife in towns on the river, there is ample opportunity to find a spot to light a campfire and enjoy toasting marshmallows. Alternatively, you may prefer to watch a DVD (all boats have DVD players, and DVD’s are available for hire from our kiosk). You can also dance around the living room or front deck to your favourite tunes as all boats have sound systems.
This is just a sample of what you can do on the mighty Murray River while on your houseboat holiday – let your imagination go wild!
